Active Transportation

HRM’s Active Transportation program aims to help residents bike, walk, roll, blade and use other “human powered” ways to move around the municipality. Encouraging Active Transportation promotes personal health and recreation, helps manage congestion, reduces emissions and supports municipal objectives for efficient land use.

HRM is helping residents use active modes for both recreation and commuting by building new greenways, trails, sidewalks and on-road bike routes. See the HRM Bike Map or visit the Trails and Greenways to “get out and check out” our expanding Active Transportation network.

HRM also supports education and awareness projects to encourage more residents to get active. HRM Bike Week and Crosswalk Safety information are two ways we are doing this. We also offer the SmartCycle program

The Active Transportation Plan was approved by Regional Council in 2006.  It provides overarching guidance for HRM’s Active Transportation policies and activities.
