Found Pets

Animal Services picks up hundreds of lost pets each year.

Dogs

Reuniting a lost dog with its family is simple if the dog is wearing an HRM license tag. If your dog is wearing its license tag when it is picked up, Animal Services will make every effort to contact you to advise that your dog has been found.

Lost dogs with no identification are held by Animal Services for three business days before being turned over to the contracted shelter.

How Do I Retrieve My Pet From Animal Services?

To retrieve a pet from Animal Services, pet owners must:

  • contact Animal Services at 490-4000 or 1-800- 835-6428 (toll free in Nova Scotia only) to make arrangements to pick up their pet.
  • provide personal photo identification, ie. driver's license.
  • provide proof of pet ownership, ie. photos, papers from your vet, a purchase receipt.

It will not be possible to retrieve your pet if:

  • Animal Services has determined that allowing your pet to remain in your care would compromise public safety.
