"Joseph Howe" honours Nova Scotia Statesman Joseph Howe. Mounted on a stylized pedestal is a bronze figure standing with one arm outstretched and the hand raised. The other hand is holding a newspaper. The front plaque is inscribed "Journalist, Orator, Poet, Statesman, Prophet, Patriot. Briton, born in Halifax, December 13th, 1804. Died in Government House, June 1st, 1873." a bronze plaque on each side depicts the Legislative Assembly. A plaque on the south side of the base depicts Howe's trial for publishing a criminal libel.
