Emergency Preparedness Checklists

The following checklists will serve as reminders of all the information you've obtained about household and car emergency preparedness on this site. Print copies and save for future reference. For more detailed information about items on the checklist please refer to the pages on emergency household and car survival kits.

Household Emergency Kit

  • Backpack
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Flashlight and battery or solar powered radio with extra batteries
  • First-aid kit including necessary medication as well as prescriptions
  • Extra pair of glasses
  • Non-perishable, ready to eat, nutritious foods (e.g., canned soup, crackers, baked beans, cookies, etc.)
  • Drinking water (at least two litres per person per day and one litre per pet per day)
  • Candles and waterproof matches (or lighters)
  • Extra car keys and cash
  • Copies of important documents, phone numbers and recent photos of family members
  • Clothing and footwear (one change of clothes per person)
  • Rainwear
  • Toilet paper and other personal supplies such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc.
  • Equipment such as disposable cutlery and dishes, a utility knife, manual can opener, bottle opener and garbage bags
  • A whistle (in case you need to attract attention)
  • Playing cards, small games and books

Car Survival Kit

  • Shovel
  • Ice scraper and brush
  • Sand or cat litter (non-clumping kind)
  • Tow chain and booster cables
  • Warning lights or flares
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Candles and a deep can in which to burn them
  • Waterproof matches
  • Extra clothing and footwear
  • Blanket
  • Emergency food pack
  • Axe or hatchet
  • First-aid kit
