Since 1754

The Mi'kmaq called it Chebucto ("Biggest Harbour").

When the British arrived in 1749, they named the newly established community after Lord Halifax, president of the British Board of Trade.

For the first few years such tasks as fighting fires were performed by the military.

But in 1754 the Union Fire Club was formed, effectively becoming the first organized fire department in Canada, and one of the oldest in North America. It became the Union Engine Company in 1768.

In 1996 the Municipalities of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County Municipality amalgamated to form Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

Thirty-eight fire departments were incorporated into what is now Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service.

250 Years Of Progress:

Halifax Regional

Fire & Emergency Service

Author: Allison Lawlor

Publisher: Nimbus Publishing

This is an account of firefighting in the Halifax Regional Municipality from 1754 to 2005.

It is the history of the region's fire departments including Halifax, Dartmouth and in the many other communities that make up the regional fire service.

From the very first days of firefighting in the city to the devastating Halifax Explosion, from wooden ladders to today’s sophisticated fire engines, Allison Lawlor details the struggles, triumphs, and bravery of the men and women who have fought fires in the HRM.

It features pictures and stories of the people, the equipment and the fires that brought the department to where it is today.

Lawlor uses stories and anecdotes to illustrate the incredibly important role firefighters play in their communities.

The book is divided chronologically; each chapter spans a few decades.

The chapters are in turn divided, often by community, but also by major fires or special reports concerning firefighting.

Lawlor has created a fitting tribute to the courageous and honourable firefighters who have made life safer for citizens in the HRM for centuries.
