At 5,620 square kilometres, we became one of the largest cities in land mass in North America.
- Toronto is 630 square kilometres
- New York City is 800 square kilometres
- We are almost as big as the entire province of Prince Edward Island, which is 5,660 square kilometres
More than 380,000 people, 40 per cent of the population of Nova Scotia, live within HRM.
Our municipality includes many diverse communities - from charming seaside towns, sun-drenched beaches, sparkling coves and miles of rugged shoreline guarded by graceful lighthouses, to the vivacity of city living, the charms of small town life and the pristine beauty of nature - all in one place! From city streets to lazy afternoons by the ocean, it's all here in Halifax Regional Municipality.
Thirty-eight fire departments were incorporated into what is now Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service to meet the challenge of providing a high level of fire protection to all residents.
About 460 career personnel and 800 volunteers respond out of 59 fire stations.
There are 144 front line apparatus, plus technical rescue, special service, reserve and support units.
