Home/Trade Shows & Fairs

The Public Education Section participates in the annual Spring & Fall Home Shows held at Exhibition Park. Every year there is a different fire safety theme that is presented in our inter-active, educational display booth. Browse our Web Site at various times throughout the year for Display booth location, and theme for that Show.
We also participate in the 50+ Expo, and the We Love Our Children Expo, located at Exhibition Park on the Prospect Rd. Watch for us also at the annual Maritime Fall Fair for fun and inter-active displays.
Each year we also participate in the Nova Scotia Home Builders Show, held at the Halifax Forum. This event usually displays technologies involved with fire safety for our homes and businesses.
Juvenile Fire Setters Program (TAPP-C)
To assist with educating children who have been involved with fire play, or fire setting; the Public Education Section offers this program. The Arson Prevention Program for Children (TAPP-C) was developed in the early 1990's as an empirically-based assessment and intervention program to address the fire setting behaviours of children and youth in the ages 2-17 categories.
The program is strictly educational, and not punitive in nature. The main goal is to encourage the participant to make wiser choices when it comes to fire and fire safety. The program is theory in nature and could include video presentations for portions of the training.
Mental Health Component: Conducted by mental health professionals if deemed necessary.
Educational Component:
The first session is conducted in the child’s or youth’s home with at least one parent or guardian present. It is a fact finding session, as well as an introduction to the program and how it works. There will be a fire safety check of the home conducted at this time.
The second and third sessions are conducted by Public Education Officers of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service at the fire station closest to the home of the child or youth. These session covers the educational aspects of fire safety, and fire setting. Some work will be sent home to be completed with parents.
At the completion of the program, the participant is asked to sign a promise statement concerning fire safety and their role; also a certificate will be presented to the participant at the completion of the program.

Schools: Fire Prevention Week Contests
Every year during Fire Prevention Week, (Oct 5-11 in 2008) the Public Education Division runs a contest in which every elementary school (P-6) is invited to participate.
Each year the contest follows the theme of Fire Prevention Week. Past years have seen Escape Planning, Candle Safety and Smoke Alarms.
Prizes are awarded to twenty students from each grade level. Prizes in previous years have been HRM Fire Backpacks, with built in Radios and Fire Escape Ladders for the home.
Students carry out the tasks of the contests with their parents and guardians.

The presentation is “age appropriate,” and offered to classes from Grades P-6. The training can also make use of a video presentation for some aspects of the program.
