The following maintenance duties are mandatory for the occupant/owner of any building where the systems identified are present.
This could include any of the following types of buildings:
- Commercial/Industrial
- Residential
- Assembly
Annually
- Fire Extinguisher Inspection - All portable fire extinguishers shall be inspected annually by a licensed portable fire extinguisher person as required by NFPA 10, Standards for Portable Fire Extinguishers. All fire extinguishers shall be properly tagged, showing the inspection date.
- Inspecting Emergency Lighting - Emergency lighting units shall be inspected yearly to ensure they are functional as per the National Fire Code article 6.7.1.7. and copies of the inspection report sent to this office. (fax 490-5228)
- Annual Test Fire Alarm - Fire alarm system shall be inspected and tested annually by a qualified electrical person at intervals of not more than one year. A copy of the test results shall be forwarded to this office for our records. (fax 490-5228)
- Maintenance Standpipe & Hose - Installation, maintenance inspecting and testing standpipe and hose systems shall be completed in conformance with the requirements od NFPA 14 & NFPA 1962.
- Inspecting Sprinkler System - Sprinkler systems shall be maintained, inspected and tested annually to meet the requirements of NFPA 25. A copy of the annual test report shall be forwarded to this office. (fax 490-5228)
- Inspection of Private Hydrants - Private hydrants shall be maintained and inspected annually to meet the requirements if the National Fire Code of Canada, Section 6.6.4. A copy of this annual report shall be sent to this office. (fax 490-5228)
- Chimney Inspections - Chimneys and flue pipes shall be inspected at least annually or at the addition of any appliance or after any chimney fire to identify a possible dangerous condition.
- Installed to B139 - All oil fired heating equipment shall be installed and maintained as required by the Installation Code for Oil Burning Equipment CSA/B139.

Every 6 Months
- Servicing Exhaust Hoods - The exhaust hood canopy and the fixed fire extinguishing system shall be serviced by a qualified person authorized by the manufacturer at intervals of not more than six months as per NFPA 96 Standards for the installation of Commercial Cooking Equipment.
- A copy of this report is to be sent to this office (fax 490-5228).

Monthly
- Inspect all doors in fire separations.
- Emergency Lighting - Emergency lighting and exit lights shall be tested / inspected monthly to ensure proper operation.
- Conduct fire alarm drills in day care centres and health care facilities.
- Fire Extinguisher Monthly Check - All portable fire extinguishers shall be checked by staff monthly to ensure the extinguishers are accessible and have no obvious physical damage, are properly sealed and fully charged.
- Test the voice communication systems and loudspeakers.
- Monthly Standpipe & Hose - Standpipe and hose systems shall be inspected monthly to ensure that all equipment is in place and operable.
- Blocked Exits - All exits and means of egress shall be maintained clear and accessible at all times to allow safe exiting.
