Harbour Solutions Project

Transition to Halifax Water

Halifax Water is the municipally owned water, wastewater and stormwater utility responsible for service within the urban core and suburban area of Halifax Regional Municipality.

As of August 1, 2007, the stormwater and wastewater assets of HRM were transferred to Halifax Water. The only wastewater infrastructure not yet transferred to Halifax Water is that related to the sewage collection system and wastewater treatment plants under the Harbour Solutions Project [HSP].

These assets will transfer to Halifax Water within 60 to 180 days after substantial completion of each individual asset in the event that no lien claims have been filed and otherwise upon resolution of any lien claim. The transfer of the Halifax assets associated with the HSP is imminent.

The transfer of Dartmouth and Herring Cove Assets are anticipated by the end of the 2009/10 fiscal year.

Halifax Water is governed by Board of Commissioners and regulated by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (NSUARB) under the Public Utilities Act. The NSUARB approves the rates, charges, rules and regulations for governing the utility.
