Fort Needham Memorial Park

Current Role and Uses

Map of Fort Needham Memorial ParkToday, Fort Needham Park is one of the largest public open spaces in the north end of Halifax. It provides recreational green space for local residents with a football field, backstop, tennis courts, a children’s playground and a community garden. The park is also designated as an off-leash dog area.

The park is an important commemorative landscape for the Event of the Halifax Explosion. A memorial service is held every year on December 6th at the Halifax Memorial Bell Tower. There is a moment of silence at 9:04 a.m. to recognize the time of the Explosion. The ceremony is ended with a musical closing of the carillon bells ringing out from the hill across the resurrected neighbourhood.
