Today, Fort Needham Park is one of the largest public open spaces in the north end of Halifax. It provides recreational green space for local residents with a football field, backstop, tennis courts, a children’s playground and a community garden. The park is also designated as an off-leash dog area.
The park is an important commemorative landscape for the Event of the Halifax Explosion. A memorial service is held every year on December 6th at the Halifax Memorial Bell Tower. There is a moment of silence at 9:04 a.m. to recognize the time of the Explosion. The ceremony is ended with a musical closing of the carillon bells ringing out from the hill across the resurrected neighbourhood.
