The Bike Patrol operates as a part-time unit of the specialized patrol section. The specially-equipped mountain bikes are on the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth from the early spring until the snow files. The bikes are also used to patrol the many parks and green spaces in the region.

Members must take a specialized police biking course which includes safe ways to ride in dangerous situations and terrain and how to use a bike as a self-defence tool and for crowd control.
Bikes are a popular patrol method because of their flexibility. In some cases, officers on bikes can get to an incident before patrol cars. The bikes are stealthy and can ride around traffic tie-ups.
Bike Patrol officers are readily available to the public and can often be seen proactively talking to children and young adults.

Bike patrol officers also take part in bike "rodeos" that help teach children the rules of the road and safe biking tips. Bike helmet legislation became law in Nova Scotia in June 1997, so these officers are also role models for our youth.
