Elmer the Elephant Safety Rules:
Look all ways before you cross the street
- Stop at the edge of the street, look left, then right, then left again before crossing the street.
- Cross at corners or where there are traffic lights, not in the middle of the street or between parked cars.
Keep away from parked cars
- Play in a safe place, away from parked cars.
- Never dart into traffic from between parked cars.
- Check for back-up lights when walking past driveways or in parking lots.
Ride your bike safely - obey signs and signals
- Make sure your bicycle is working properly. Get your parents to check the tires, brakes, lights, etc.
- Make sure your helmet fits properly.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Obey all rules of the road.
- Don't carry passengers on handlebars or double ride with anyone.
- Ride only during the day - never at night.
Play in a safe place away from the street
- Play in a safe place in your neighbourhood - backyard, playground, or in a field instead of a street.
- Have designated play areas that do not allow access to streets and roadways.
- Let parents know where you are going.
Walk when you cross the street
- Don't run. When you run, your head is usually down and you can't see if cars are coming. You'll also be less likely to trip and fall if you walk.
Where there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic
- Keep as far left as possible, facing traffic when you are walking where there is no sidewalk.
- Walk in a single line when you are with other children.
- Wear bright colours so drivers are better able to see you.
Always wear your seatbelt in the car
- Always remain in your seat.
- Sit upright with your back against the seat.
- Make sure you use your seatbelt every time you go in the car, no matter how short the trip.
