Special Events

The Community Relations & Crime Prevention section is responsible for organizing and overseeing a number of special events that go on in HRM throughout the year. We also take pride in being involved in several fundraising activities.

Child Identification Record

Occasionally, despite the efforts of parents and friends, a child will go missing. It’s worth noting that more than 85 per cent of abductions are parental and are often preventable. The Child Identification Record will assist the work of the police should your child ever go missing. In such a difficult situation, small details can be forgotten or seem unnecessary. The police may be able to locate your child sooner with more information to work from. For more information on this program contact your child’s school liaison officer or click on the following link: Child Identification

Police Week
Police Week

Have you ever wanted to know how police dogs sniff out drugs? How about learning how to lift fingerprints? Would you like to see our Emergency Response Team in action? Well, this is your chance! Each year in May, Halifax Regional Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police host a Police Show, with hands-on displays and demonstrations by the K-9 Unit, Emergency Response Team and Bomb Squad.

Cop Shop

In 2005, Halifax Regional Police and Halifax Shopping Center became partners in this initiative where officers take on the role of personal shopper to specially chosen local children.

In addition to receiving a stocking filled with merchandise from Halifax Shopping Centre retailers, Halifax Shopping Centre donates a $200 gift card to each child to spend during Cop Shop.   Each child then shops with officers as they use their gift cards to purchase winter clothing, toys and Christmas gifts.

The children chosen for Cop Shop are recommended by a variety of sources and are chosen because of need, recognition of specific academic or sports achievement or because of volunteer efforts that are making a difference in their communities.

Bicycle Rodeo

Each year, Halifax Regional Police conducts Bicycle Safety Rodeos in Halifax and Dartmouth. This event is a great opportunity to educate parents and children about the safety aspects of riding a bicycle on streets and roads. The goal is to empower young cyclists with a minimal set of skills for on-road riding.   For more information about bike safety click on the following link: Bicycle

Halifax Regional Police Teddy Bear Awards

Teddy The Teddy Bear Awards has been with the department since before amalgamation. Cst. Barry Warnell started the program with the Dartmouth Police Department in 1996. In 1998 it expanded to include elementary schools in Halifax and Bedford. Halifax Regional Police has partnered with community minded businesses to provide these bears to students who demonstrate good citizenship at the school as well as non-violent or peaceful actions toward teachers and other students. The program has been expanded such that just over 300 bears will be presented to students in late Spring.

Run For The CureRun for the Cure

Each year Halifax Regional Police participates in the Run for the Cure.

Cops for Cancer

In June 1994, Sergeant Gary Goulet of the Edmonton Police Service met Lyle Jorgenson, a five-year-old boy who had cancer. Sgt. Goulet requested the meeting after learning that Lyle was being teased at school because of his hair loss due to chemotherapy. Sgt. Goulet was so moved by Lyle's story that he decided to do something. That was the beginning of the Canadian Cancer Society's Cops for Cancer campaign.

Since his head was already shaved, Sgt. Goulet gathered a group of Edmonton officers who were willing to shave their own heads and joined Lyle at school to show kids that being bald was cool.

From 1998 until 2005, Halifax Regional Police were involved with the Cops for Cancer campaign where officers raised money and had their heads shaved.
