Diversity

Halifax Regional Municipality and the communities within are made up of a multitude of diverse culture. Whether these communities are long standing or newly arising, we as an organization recognize the unique nature of these communities.  Therefore, we have a committed obligation to provide distinguished service in policing by improving communication, enhancing services and developing strong relationships within these communities.

Valuing diversity is a core competency of our organization and is an integral component of our mission, "Leading and Partnering in our Community to Serve and Protect."

Equity Diversity Officer

LogoThe Equity Diversity Officer position was established in April 2004 as a dedicated position to address diversity related issues. Reporting to the Chief of Police, this position ensures a co-ordinated response to diversity concerns, which includes, but is not limited to, community outreach, training and recruitment. The Equity Diversity Officer works with other units within the Department as well as with the community to address diversity issues, thereby incorporating both internal and external responsibilities and providing a consistent contact point.

As a part of the diversity mandate, the Equity Diversity Officer is actively involved in the Chief’s Diversity Advisory Committee (CDAC) and the Diversity Action Team (DAT). The CDAC is made up of a representative group of diverse citizens who live and work in our community, their role is to offer a community perspective and serve as a knowledge base to the Chief’s Office on issues related to diversity. The DAT is an internal mechanism within the Department, committed to promoting and encouraging diversity in the workplace.

As recommended in a 2003 Human Rights Decision, Halifax Regional Police hired two consulting firms - Das Management & Educational Services and Perivale + Taylor - to conduct a needs assessment of its current policies and practices on anti-racism education and diversity training.  Copies of these reports, and HRP's Response are available in Adobe format as follows:
