The policing situation within Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is unique in Canada. HRM is the only municipality that has a fully employed police service (Halifax Regional Police) and a contracted police service (RCMP) serving the same municipality.

Halifax Regional Police (HRP) is responsible for policing the urban core of Halifax Regional Municipality as well as the area commonly referred to as the Sambro Loop and the Purcells Cove - Herring Cove Loop.  The remaining areas of HRM are policed by the RCMP.
