Johanna MacDonald, Volunteer of the Year

Halifax Regional Police is pleased to announce Johanna MacDonald as the recipient of the 2012 Volunteer of the Year award.

Johanna MacDonald joined HRP Victim Services in 2003 as a volunteer and exemplifies all the qualities of a dedicated volunteer. She accepts extra shifts when called upon and acts as a trainer and mentor to new volunteers when they join the unit.

As an example of Johanna’s outstanding service to the community, a sergeant noted that her support in a recent crisis was pivotal. He was very grateful for Johanna's help assisting with counselling the family in their time of need. The effort, willingness and professionalism of Johanna to go the extra mile in her volunteer capacity prompted the officer’s accolades.

Johanna volunteered 298 hours in 2010, an averaged of 25 hours per month. In 2011, she volunteered 209 hours which averages 17 hours a month. Johanna has always been a wise and valuable volunteer; however, her efforts over the past two years have raised her profile to where she is being noticed for her consistent and dedicated work.

Johanna is honoured to have been named our Volunteer of the Year. “Victim Services holds a special spot for me. The work that we do, we know we are making a connection with people. It’s not always about saying the right words, it’s walking away knowing that you made a connection with that person in their time of need,” she says.

Halifax Regional Police congratulates Johanna for her service to our community and thanks her for her dedication to making HRM a safer place to live, work and play.
