Arts, Culture, Community!  in Musquodoboit Harbour

Musquodoboit Harbour is celebrating new life for its old elementary school.  The old school was built in the 1920’s and a key part of the pilot visioning process in the community was to find a way to re-purpose the school when it was closing.

It was a long journey, but this year the school re-opened as an arts and culture centre, but with a fairly broad purpose:  to promote the health, well-being and community spirit of people of all ages in Musquodoboit Harbour and surrounding areas.

Some of the original goals of the visioning process that the New!  Old School Community Gathering Place is helping to fulfill include:

A-4 Protect heritage/cultural buildings and landscapes,

R-4 Develop opportunities for community cultural entertainment and recreation,

E-2 Encourage tourism through a greater range of events, attractions and accommodations,

Y-3 Develop a youth centre with youth-centered activities,

Y-4 Involve and retain youth in the community.

The Old School now boasts a Multi-purpose and Movement Studio space large enough for Coffee Houses, theatre, dance, fitness – whatever, after knocking a wall out between two classrooms.  The room is also surrounded by beautiful windows on both sides.

There is also a Visual Arts Studio, a 2nd Time Around Shoppe, a Van Gogh Community Lounge and a Youth Centre.  Events so far include: participation in Canada’s first Culture Days, Community Music Jams, High Tea, Create Your Own Adventure Camps, and drawing and sculpture classes.  Other ideas in development include:  after-school fun, tutoring and a Hub Musquodoboit Harbour.

The Old School is also hosting a series of Community Development workshops, a Community Market, and hopefully a Summer Arts Festival.  The Grand Opening is currently scheduled for end of March.  Everyone is welcome to come visit!  Events will include a community fair and gala celebration in the evening.
