Public Information Meeting & Open House Well Attended
Open House
The open house included wall-mounted maps (see maps in next section below) displaying background information on the site, the Plan amendment process, and key aspects of the proposed policies and zones. Participants were encouraged to record their comments at each display station and HRM staff were available to answer questions about the proposed amendments. Representatives from the existing Penhorn Plaza/Sobeys companies were also present at the meeting to listen to the community's feedback and to answer questions about their respective future plans for the former mall property.
The Penhorn/Woodlawn Vision Action Team hosted an information table inviting attendees to find out more about the Penhorn/Woodlawn Vision, its implementation and their latest effort to establish a Penhorn Lake and Area trail.
Presentation and Q & A Period
HRM staff provided a slideshow presentation followed by a question and answer period for which minutes were recorded.
Next Steps
The next step in the process is the preparation of a staff report to Regional Council including the proposed Plan amendments, along with the minutes of the December 14, 2011 Public Information Meeting & Open House.
Should Regional Council wish to move the proposed amendments to a public hearing, it is anticipated to be scheduled in late February/early March 2012. A minimum of 14 days advance notification of the public hearing will be provided by mail to area property owners, advertisement in the Municipal Notices section of the Chronicle Herald newspaper (Saturday edition), as well as posted to this webpage.
Staff encourage comments on the proposed amendments by December 30, 2011. For more information, please contact Maria Jacobs at 490-4405 or David Lane at 490-5593.

Penhorn Lake Clean Up
Despite the weather, the Vision Action Team hosted a very successful Penhorn Lake Community Clean-up on Saturday, July 9th. Over 30 volunteers, including many young families, persevered through the heavy rain to collect more than 30 bags of garbage and a dozen bulky items from the area surrounding the lake.
With community support and the generosity of volunteers, the jewel of Penhorn Lake shines a little brighter!

A Community Vision for Penhorn and Woodlawn was approved by Regional Council in December 2009. Read about the Vision and learn how it was created.
Now, a Vision Action Team (VAT) has been created to implement the Vision. This team of volunteers will work with HRM staff and community stakeholders.

The VAT will also have the opportunity to be part of a Community Planning Process for the former Penhorn Mall site.

Focused Community Workshops
The workshops in February and March 2009 asked local residents, "What are your ideas and priorities for our community?"
The feedback was great! It will be used by the CLG in creating a vision and action plan. Once a draft vision and action is ready, residents can again provide their feedback.

The Community Survey is now closed. Thank you to over 200 residents who participated. The results are now available.
