Sidewalk maintenance includes the following services: concrete sidewalk maintenance, asphalt sidewalk and walkways maintenance, brick sidewalk maintenance and asphalt curb maintenance. This service is normally provided between May and October annually.
Concrete Sidewalk Maintenance
Broken, uneven or deteriorated sidewalk slabs, once reported, are evaluated and if necessary are marked, and/or signed until they can be repaired or replaced (weather permitting). Asphalt may be used to repair the section of sidewalk temporarily as weather conditions and work scheduling permits.
Curb & Gutter Maintenance
Damaged, deteriorated, broken or heaved sections of curbs and gutter are repaired as work scheduling and funding permits as required to maintain proper drainage control.
Handicap Ramp Maintenance
Handicap ramps are repaired as required to eliminate potential hazards to users. New installations are installed on intersecting streets and/or as approved by Traffic Services. Concrete ramps are not installed or replaced in blocks scheduled for sidewalk renewal under the capital budget. Potentially hazardous ramps and new ramp installations in capital sidewalk blocks are temporarily repaired/installed with asphalt material as weather conditions and work scheduling permits
Asphalt Sidewalk Maintenance
Asphalt sidewalk and walkway surfaces are repaired and/or resurfaced as required, and as resources permits to minimize potential hazard to pedestrians.
Brick Sidewalk Maintenance
Repairs to brick sidewalks including the replacement of loose and missing bricks, re-mortaring of brick joints, replacement of larger areas of brick sidewalk with concrete and temporary asphalt repairs are carried out as required and funding permits.
Asphalt Curb Maintenance
Asphalt curb maintenance includes replacement of damaged, deteriorated, broken sections or sections reduced due to resurfacing to maintain proper drainage control and street aesthetics. Repair of asphalt curbs damaged due to snow and ice operations are repaired under the snow and ice related programs account on a demand basis.
