What is Girls Soar?
The Girls Soar initiative is dedicated to increasing opportunities for girls and young women to be active. We are working to increase the number of female centered opportunities for physical activity primarily through promotion and education in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The basic principle of female centered programs is to provide girls and young women with equal access to active opportunities that meet their needs.
Why do we need to have Girls Soar?
Less than one percent of grade 11 females in latest 2005 PACY study (a Nova Scotian study) reached the minimum requirement of physical activity, 60 minutes, 5 days a week (as seen below in the chart).
Percentage of boys and girls in grades 3, 7, and 11 from PACY1 and PACY2 who met the recommended standard of physical activity.
Girls face similar and different barriers to physical activity participation than boys. Being uncomfortable participating in front of their male counterparts is something many girls experience. Programs that are female only provide numerous benefits for girls and young women (Fenton, et al., 1999; Humbert, 1995; Kippen, 1999).
