Definition of "Other Animal"

HRM By-Law A-300 Section 9 - Animal Offences provides regulations for pets that are not a bird, cat or dog.

Common pets covered under the Animal Offences section include:

"Other Animal" Owners' Responsibilities

Owners of animals other than a cat or a dog are responsible for:

  • keeping their animal enclosed in an escape proof building, aquarium, pen, cage or container or securely tethered on a leash, harness, chain or other device when off of the premises of the owner.
  • preventing their animal from attacking a person or another animal.
  • preventing their animal from damaging public property or property owned by another individual.
  • immediately removing defecation from public property or property owned by another individual.

Violating HRM By-Law A-300 Part 9 - Animal Offences

Pet owners found to be in violation of HRM By-Law A-300 Part 9 may:

  • be issued a warning notice.
  • be issued a Summary Offense Ticket of $342.41 or greater.
  • face prosecution in a court of law.
  • have their animals taken from them by Animal Services .

Dealing With An "Other Animal" Nuisance

Residents experiencing an issue with "other animals" should:

  • talk to the owner of the pet. They may not be aware that their pet is being disruptive.
  • register a complaint by contacting the HRM Calll Centre at 490-4000, 1-800-835-6428 (toll free in Nova Scotia). You must be able to provide a description of the pet, the name and address of the pet's owner, and the date and time of the incident.
