ALL WEEK:

Cyclists Get a Free Ride! (May 29 to June 7, 2009)

Board any Metro Transit Harbour Ferry or MetroLink bus (Route #159 Portland Hills, #165 Woodside, or #185 Sackville) with your bicycle and travel for free during Bike Week. **** NEW THIS YEAR: Routes #56 and #72 are new ‘ bike rack routes’ for 2009.  You and your bicycle can enjoy a free ride on these routes too!!****  Instructions for using MetroLink bike racks: www.halifax.ca/metrotransit/MetroLinkBikeRackGuide.html

Road Safety Checks

HRM Police in partnership with Halifax Cycling Coalition and Ecology Action Centre will be stopping motorists and cyclists during Bike Week to distribute safety information about sharing the road.

Charity Bike Drop-Off at MEC

Drop off your unwanted bicycles at Mountain Equipment Co-op for the duration of HRM Bike Week. Bikes will be collected and given to the Ecology Action Centre’s ‘Bike Again’ Project.

Ride your bike to the following small businesses, and receive discounts as follows:

JustUs!  Spring Garden and Barrington locations are giving 20% off drinks.

HRM Community Bicycle Auction - Devonshire Arena "FREE"
Viewing 8 a.m., auction begins at 10 a.m.

Don’t have a bicycle?  HRM’s annual bicycle auction is a great place to pick up a set a wheels so that everyone in the family can enjoy the rest of Bike Week! Almost 200 recovered bikes will be auctioned off. In association with the auction, volunteers from the Ecology Action Centre’s BikeAgain! project will be on hand to give your ‘new-to-you’ bike a quick maintenance assessment.  HRM Procurement, Anne Gilhen 476-2244.

Shubie Locks Tour – Halifax Ramblers Bicycle Club "FREE"
Meet 9:45 a.m. for 10 a.m. departure
Fairbanks Centre, Shubie Park, Dartmouth

Join the Halifax Ramblers Bicycle Club for a tour of the lower section of Nova Scotia's historic Shubenacadie Canal. Meet members of the Canal Commission along the way and learn how the canal was engineered and how it contributed to a fascinating period of this region's early settlement.  Easy pace, suitable for families. 15 km return 2 hours. Treats at ride’s end.

Ride the Rails to Trails  "FREE (excluding bike rental)"

Train Station Bike & Bean, 5401 St. Margarets Bay Road, Tantallon

Morning warm-up at the Bike & Bean along with bike fitting.  Bikes will be available for rent.  We will guide a two-hour return ride towards Hubbards and back on the rails to trails.   Followed by a maintenance course.

Join Halifax Bicycle Families for a fun family picnic for people and kids who enjoy cycling in Halifax and those interested in cycling as a family.  Come and learn from other parents about cycling with children in bicycle trailers, and other topics.  Share tips and experiences, and discuss how to improve conditions for the family bicycling in HRM.  Bring your own lunch or snacks.  Rain date is June 6th, 2009.

Halifax Criterium – on the Halifax North Common
9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Registration:  Open at 7:30am (at the Halifax Armouries – North Park St.) 

The streets around the Halifax North Common have been a venue for closed circuit (criterium) bicycle racing for over 30 years.  This year the HALIFAX CRITERIUM returns with the spectacle of the top cyclists from around the region competing to be this year’s champion.  Kids’ Fun Races, always a crowd pleaser, will also be held for children ages 5-12 as part of the Open Street Party immediately following the Criterium.  See website for details.

Bike Week Open Street Party  "FREE"

Halifax North Commons

The streets around the North Commons will be closed to motorized traffic and open to everyone else to enjoy freely. During this time, we are hoping to combine a free flow course for wheelers all around the North Commons with stops for vendors, displays, games, contests, safety clinics, and other activities for Haligonians of all ages. 

The Halifax Cycling Coalition is coordinating this event with the support of HRM as a means to encourage all forms of active living. We want to promote health, green transportation, cycling safety and a good time for the whole family.

23rd Annual Cyclesmith Duathlon

Members of Velo Halifax Bicycle Club will show you all you need to know about traveling by bicycle including what to wear, what to bring, what to eat, and where to go. Learn about upcoming club rides, and see some great slides of recent Velo trips!  Velo Halifax is one of Atlantic Canada's largest bicycle clubs and organizes evening, day, and multi-day bicycle rides starting in Halifax and Dartmouth for riders of all abilities.

Arrive at St. Mary's Boat Club on bicycle this evening, and stay for a complimentary one hour boating experience!

Bike the Bridge "FREE"

Opportunity for new cyclists, or anyone who would like a refresher course on how to bike across the bridge.  A CanBike instructor will take participants through a number of exercises including how to get on and off the bridge, braking, climbing and straight line riding skills, and speed control.  Please register by June 1st to Michelle (contact below).

The Office of Sustainability at Dalhousie University is proud to host a webinar (web seminar) and workshop as an event for HRM Bike Week 2009 with John Luton, the Executive Director of Capital Bike and Walk Society and Coordinator for Vancouver Island Cycle Tourism Alliance. Mr. Luton is currently a city councilor and has participated in the instigation and/or shaping of many projects in the improving cycling and walking conditions in various regions and municipalities. Mr. Luton will be conductive a live webinar focusing on the use of bicycles as sustainable means of transportation and the key components required to make communities more cycle friendly. Following the webinar, there will be a panel discussion from local representatives from the HRM cycling community focusing on key strategies and initiatives to better create a city of cyclists in the HRM. Trail Teaser Rides - Halifax Ramblers Bicycle Club "FREE"
Meet 6:45 p.m. - all rides start at 7 p.m., 
Locations throughout HRM

The Ramblers are organizing 10 short trail rides which will happen simultaneously in HRM. They will be very social, slow paced, and have frequent stops where the leader (from the Nova Scotia Ramblers Bicycle Club) may describe various points of interest. The rides will last +/- one hour (approx 10km each).  These rides are suitable for the whole family and are designed to introduce new folks / kids to our wonderful trail system and encourage them to want to return; hence the “tease”.  Locations are still to be determined, but all will take place on off-road, on primarily crusher dust trails, and start/ finish in the same location.  There will be PRIZES too!

Yoga for Cyclists "FREE"

Yoga for cyclists is an introductory class to help build a cyclist's strength and endurance while increasing flexibility to chronically tight muscles due to cycling. This workshop style class will teach you techniques and a variety of different yoga poses to help you to strengthen your thigh muscles and lengthen your hamstrings, to support lower back pain and injuries. Further focus will be on hip openers as well as core strength and flexibility.

This class is suitable for beginners as well as those who would like to fine tune their alignment to assist them with their cycling.

Riders meet at the town clock, just south of the Alderney Gate Library.  Ride starts at 5:30 p.m.  Bicycling is a great way to unwind after a long week at work, and clear your head for the upcoming weekend. Join members of the Halifax Regional Police Bike Patrol on this leisurely after work ride of +/- 10km. Prize draw at ride's end for gift certificates at the Celtic Corner.

International Trails Day Round Ups   "FREE"
Assemble at 9:45am, both rides start at 10:00am –
Two start options (see below)

Join the Halifax Ramblers Bicycle Club and the Halifax Regional Trails folks!

Group A – Meet at the BLT trail head by the Coke Plant, Lakeside and go west on the BLT, arriving in French Village at 11:45am – distance 44k return (or start / end somewhere in the middle for a shorter ride)

Group B – Meet in Hubbards at the Scotiabank parking lot and go east to French Village, arriving 11:55am – 54k (can be shortened by starting somewhere in the middle).

Basin Blast – Velo Halifax  "FREE"
10:00am - 1:00pm
Start - Perks on the Halifax Waterfront, End - Celtic Corner, Dartmouth Waterfront

The Basin Blast is a 45-50 kilometre moderately paced, bicycle touring event, led by members of Velo Halifax Bicycle club. The ride takes cyclists from Perks on Lower Water Street, north along Barrington Street, past Sea View Park, along the Bedford Highway Bicycle Route, past Sunnyside, out the Rocky Lake Road and back to Dartmouth via the Waverley Road. The ride ends at the Celtic Corner on Alderney Drive where we will have lunch. Following the event, participants can return to Halifax via the Macdonald Bridge or by ferry.
