Caring for our environment is everyone’s responsibility. Halifax Regional Municipality is one of a number of local organizations working hard to help preserve and protect our environment. We developed the concept of Naturally Green to bring together separate environmental activities within the Municipality in order to provide more opportunities to work together with our residents

Halifax Regional Municipality is partnering with Seniors Groups and other volunteer groups in the community to provide a program to assist seniors (65yrs+) and other persons with disabilities with snow removal this winter.

Provincial Programs of Interest

CAP Assessment Program

The CAP Assessment Program (CAP) is a new program designed to protect Nova Scotia property owners from dramatic increases in market value assessment by limiting or "capping" the amount of annual assessment increases.

Community ACCESS-Ability Grant Program

The Community ACCESS-ability Program is one way the Government of Nova Scotia is demonstrating its commitment to equal opportunity and improving access to community facilities and venues for persons with disabilities. Under this program, funds are available for cost shared grants to community groups for accessibility related capital improvements.

Heating Oil Rebate Program

Keep the Heat is a program to help with the rising cost of home heating fuel. The program is for those with family incomes under $25,000, singles with incomes less than $15,000, seniors receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement or allowance, and people receiving Income Assistance from the Department of Community Services.

The program offers a one-time rebate cheque, a coupon for a furnace tune-up and an energy savings kit. For more information please contact 424-5200, or toll free at 1-800-670-4357.

An assistance program for making minor home adaptations to extend the time low-income seniors can live in their own homes.

Provincial Tax Rebate for Seniors Program

The program provides eligible homeowners with a 50% rebate on the municipal property taxes paid the previous year, up to a maximum of $400.00 per year. The rebate is always based on the property taxes paid in the previous year, and is in addition to any rebate received from Halifax Regional Municipality.

Residential Rehabilitation Assitance Program for Persons With Disabilities

This program offers financial assistance to homeowners and landlords to undertake accessibility work to modify dwellings occupied or intended for occupancy by low-income persons with disabilities.

Seniors Home Energy Assistance Program

If you are a low-to-moderate income senior over the age of 65 and you participate in the EnerGuide for Existing Homes Program, you can qualify for both a federal and a matching provincial grant to a maximum of $1,000, have the the $150 cost of the first audit covered, receive an energy savings kit valued at $40, and an extra $400 grant.
