Zoning

The first thing you should do when planning your project is to check the zoning for your property which sets out the land uses, lot sizes, lot coverage, building heights and setbacks that apply to your property.

Permits & Inspections

Construction permit applications and fees are required for new home construction, additions & renovations, sheds (detached garages & accessory buildings), decks (above grade wood decks & railings), pools (in ground & above ground) and solar collectors (roof & ground-mounted collectors).

Community Plans

Municipal Planning Strategies and Land Use By-Laws, including maps and zoning. Includes the Downtown Secondary Planning Strategy (HRMbyDesign).

Building Code & By-Laws

All construction must comply with the NS Building Code and applicable HRM By-Laws, including the Building By-Law and the Swimming Pool By-Law.
