The Civic Addressing "Rules":

HRM Civic Addressing By-Law (C-300)
  The By-Law gives Civic Addressing the ability to re-address properties that are incorrectly numbered or that create difficulities for emergency service.

  The Policy explains the role of the Public Safety Committee, provides street naming/renaming and civic number and renumbering guidelines, as well as community naming and boundary delineation guidelines.

Quick Tips: How to Post your Civic Number

  • Post on the front of your house, visible from the street, PLUS...
  • Post at the beginning of your driveway if your house is more

than 100ft (30m) from the road or hidden from view

  • The sign should be at least 48 inches (1.2m) from the ground

to meet regulations

  • Civic numbers shall be in Arabic numerals only
  • The minimum height of numerals on residential properties shall not be less than 4 inches
  • The minimum height of numerals on non residential properties shall not be less than 8 inches
  • The colour of the numerals shall clearly contrast with the background upon which the numbers are displayed
