First Marriage in New City Hall
In July, a young couple became the first to be married in the new City Hall. The bride, a Newfoundland girl in service, had become
acquainted with a seafaring man and “true love ran smoothly enough for a while”, but then, when the young man “should have
been most solicitous for her welfare”, he left his former love “to paddle her own canoe”. Friends of the girl, however, intervened
and they had the lad arrested. He then professed his willingness to marry and so the ceremony duly took place in one of City
Hall’s rooms.
