Graffiti Removal Chart
The following information is based on the procedures and products used by HRM staff in the removal of graffiti from HRM-owned property.

HRM uses environmentally-friendly products. Caution is given, however, on the use of any product in both a closed environment and outside. Wearing of protective clothing (ie gloves/mask) is always recommended.

Graffiti removal products referenced in the chart can be purchased at most home hardware and paint stores - just ask for "graffiti remover".

Surface Type

A product which works on one surface may not necessarily be successful on another similar surface.  For example, different paint manufacturers have different strengths of paint which need to be treated differently. The stronger the paint adheres to a surface, the more difficult it is to remove.

TIP:  The warmer the surface is, the easier to clean (ie: sun directly hitting the affected area).

BRICK

The product used will depend upon the type of brick:

Smooth surface brick can be sprayed with graffiti remover, scrubbed with a pad and then rinsed off with water.

Porous-type cement bricks could require the use of a graffiti remover, however, you may find that the area will not clean as well as the smooth surface bricks. This may require using a different type of graffiti remover, such as a gel-type available on the market, requiring the product to set on the surface for a period of time (10-15 minutes) and then using a power wash unit.

TIP: A hot water pressure system works far better than a cold water system.

NOTE: Depending upon the paint that was used, a shadow of a tag may still be evident even after cleaning. Repeating the process a second time can often clean it completely, however, on occasion a shadow will remain.

CAUTION: Soda blasting is another way of removing paint off brick but one must be careful of not ruining the brick (HRM has not used this process to date).

ALUMINUM SIDING

Use graffiti remover and lightly use a scrub pad, rinse or power wash.

You may need to apply a different type of graffiti remover such as a gel-type product available on the market, depending on how bad the area is.

CAUTION: Take care not to take the original color off the siding. In some cases, you may need to color match and paint over as the products will remove the paint right to the bare metal.

VINYL SIDING

Use graffiti remover and lightly use a scrub pad, then rinse or use a power washer.

CAUTION: Some vinyl siding will break down as soon as remover is applied, so it’s best to try a small area to start. In some cases, a mild household cleaner may remove the graffiti, however, the end result may be having to repaint the area with matching paint.

MASONRY (CEMENT)

Depending on the area, the less expensive way to cover up cement is by painting over.

However, in certain areas where you can’t paint over, apply graffiti remover, let set for 10-15 minutes then power wash.

Depending upon how bad the area is covered, you may have to revert to a different type of graffiti remover such as a gel type product available on the market.

It may be determined that both the graffiti remover and gel product may need to be applied. If so, let both sit together for a period of time (10-15 minutes) and use power wash.

CAUTION: Soda blasting is another way of removing paint off cement but one must be careful of not ruining the cement (as noted above, HRM has not used this procedure to date).

METAL SIGNS, UTILITY BOXES

Apply graffiti remover, use a scrub pad, and then wash off with a spray water bottle.

WOOD

Wood is very difficult to clean.

In some cases, graffiti remover can be applied and scrubbed with a scrub pad.

Painting over or power washing the area will be most effective.

SANDSTONE, MARBLE, GRANITE

CAUTION: As these surfaces are very delicate, seek professional advice.

However, you can try applying graffiti remover to a small area and scrubbing it off. If you see that the area is being damaged by this process, stop immediately.

PAVEMENT
