The Mayor’s Award for Literary Achievement

Mayor Peter J. Kelly is seeking nominations for the twelfth annual Mayor’s Awards for Literary Achievement. The $1500.00 prize will recognize outstanding literary contributions made by a resident of the Halifax Regional Municipality. The award will be presented by the Mayor or his designate at the Atlantic Book Awards at Alderney Landing on April 14, 2010.

Nomination Process:

Nominations can be made by
(1) The general public
(2) Schools, libraries, and similar organizations
(3) Cultural organizations
(4) Businesses

Deadline:

Nominations must be received by: Friday March 19, 2010, 4:00 pm and can be sent to:

Award Description/Eligibility:

  • In order to be eligible, nominees must currently reside in the Halifax Regional Municipality
  • The nominee will have made a significant contribution to our literary life.
  • Nominees may include, but not be limited to: authors, publishers, librarians, archivists, journalists, educators, book sellers and teachers.
  • Recipients are eligible to win the award one time only.

Frequency:

The prize will be awarded annually, except when the Selection Committee deems that there is no suitable recipient.

Award Presentation:

The award will be presented by the Mayor or his designate at the Atlantic Writing Awards in April 2009.


Selection process:

The Selection Committee will be made up of:

  • A representative of the HRM Literary Community.
  • A representative of the Halifax Regional Municipality
  • A representative of the Halifax Regional Library
  • A representative of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia

- Committee members cannot be nominated for this award, nor related to any nominees. 
- Committee members can stand for no more than three consecutive terms. 
- The Selection Committee will meet following the application deadline to select a successful candidate.
- The selected candidate will be contacted and asked to attend the Atlantic Writing Awards where they will be honoured.
