Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Book Illustration
Mayor Peter J. Kelly is seeking nominations for the twelfth annual Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Book Illustration. The $1500.00 prize will recognize excellence in book illustration by a resident illustrator, artist, or photographer of the Halifax Regional Municipality. The award will be presented by the Mayor or his designate at the Atlantic Book Awards at Alderney Landing on April 14, 2010.

Nominations can be made by:

  • Professional or self-publishing book publishers that
    • Pay royalties or financially compensate the illustrator
    • Distribute their works through normal book selling channels
  • Members of the general public or book seller who:
    • Pay royalties or financially compensate the illustrator
    • Distribute their works through normal book selling channels
  • Cultural Organizations who:
    • Pay royalties or financially compensate the illustrator
    • Distribute their works through normal book selling channel

Award Eligibility

  • Nominees must currently reside in the Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Books will have been published and available on the market during the previous calendar yers (2009) and have been available in bookstores in HRM.
  • Illustrated books must be a minimum of 24 pages in length
  • All books must have an ISBN
  • Self-published books are eligible
  • Book must be a first edition Canadian or foreign trade book

Selection Process
The Selection Committee will be made up of:

  • An HRM visual artist
  • A representative of a local bookseller
  • A representative of the Halifax Regional Library

Nominations must be received by: Friday March 19, 2010 at 4:00pm

Four (4) copies of the illustrated book must accompany the nomination, and be provided at no cost to HRM. Copies will not be returned.
