Freedom of the City - Maritime Forces Atlantic

THIS DAY AND HENCEFORTH MAY IT BE KNOWN THAT on this occasion in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy, that the Halifax Regional Municipality in the realm of Canada of her Gracious Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, the Second, by virtue of the authority of a resolution passed unanimously by Halifax Regional Council on the 4th day of May, Two Thousand and Ten,

HEREBY PROCLAIM AND GRANT TO MARITIME FORCES ATLANTIC the Freedom of the Halifax Regional Municipality all rights and privileges pertaining thereto, as long as the waters of Chebucto Bay and the Atlantic Ocean embrace the shores of said municipality, to enter therein and march throughout its streets, thoroughfares and highways, without hindrance or trespass on any and all occasions with flags flying, bayonets fixed and band playing.

This Freedom is granted and confirmed in grateful acknowledgement and recognition of services rendered and duty bravely performed by the men and women of Canada’s East Coast Navy throughout the past 100 years, and this grant is particularly to perpetuate the feats of bravery, devotion and glory of East Coast ships and their sailors, Regular and Reserve forces, who were called to active duty in World War One, World War Two, the Korean Conflict, the Persian Gulf War and in response to natural disasters and disturbances dear to the hearts of the said Municipality and all of its citizens.

In particular and without limiting the foregoing, this Freedom is granted and to be recognized as a memorial to all ranks who have served and contributed to the Navy’s distinguished history, who have given their lives on the altar of freedom in the performance of their duty and earned for their comrades and all who came after them the honour now recognized and being secured to them in perpetuity by their fellow citizens hereby recorded.

Navy Centennial Day
May 4, 2010

The Halifax Regional Municipality in the Province of Nova Scotia brings greetings and good wishes to the Canadian Navy in recognition of its’ Centennial Year.

WHEREAS Canada’s Navy originated on May 4, 1910; and

WHEREAS Halifax Regional Municipality is the home of the East Coast Navy; and

WHEREAS the men and women of the Canadian Navy have loyally served the Halifax Regional Municipality, its’ member communities in the region and the province of Nova Scotia as fine representatives both at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS the residents of Halifax Regional Municipality wish to recognize the outstanding achievements and contribution of the Canadian Navy to our community; and convey their best wishes to the Canadian Navy in recognition of its’ Centennial Year, 2010.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Peter Kelly, on behalf of Halifax Regional Council, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2010, as Navy Centennial Day in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
