Pavement Treatment Life Cycle

The philosophy of street treatments and how they are implemented can vary depending on who you talk to; though, the basic principle of timely and effective treatments has proven to stop streets from deteriorating prematurely.

For example, when a street is reconstructed, it is considered to be at year zero. In nine years the micro seal will be completed. Four years after the next micro seal will be completed and so on (see table below).

The life cycle model is used only as a guide. Each street that requires a treatment will be assessed prior to the work being carried out. If the street is holding up well, the proposed treatment may be deferred for a year or two. If the street is deteriorating quicker than it anticipated, a different treatment may be proposed.

Projects such as Paving Renewals or Pulverization can be considered a Reconstruction.

This particular life cycle strategy was developed 'in house' by staff and represents a street which falls into the Collector category of street classification.
