Design Section

The design section provides or directs professional design services for the implementation of the approved HRM Capital Budget works program. The work includes the preparation of studies, designs, plans, specifications, tender documents and cost estimates related to municipal works as well as providing engineering expertise to other departments, divisions and sections of HRM on specialized non-capital works. Additional responsibilities include preparing technical and staff reports to Community and Regional Council and the development of the annual HRM Capital Works Program including  cost estimates and project justification.

Design Services also investigates and provides advice on the following subjects: Bridges, Retaining Walls, Guide Rails, New Sidewalk, Private Road Takeovers and Overhead Sign Structures.

The design section is made up of professional engineers and their technical assistants. Each engineer is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS). Designs are carried out in a professional manner to ensure public safety, and also to ensure “value engineering” is applied throughout the design process to provide the best engineering solution possible.
