Councillor Steve Streatch to fulfil duties despite illness
Councillor Steve Streatch is vowing to continue serving the needs of his constituents, despite battling cancer.
Councillor Streatch, 49, will advise his Council colleagues today that he has been diagnosed with cancer of the head and neck and is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
“I am optimistic of a full recovery and my intention is to continue attending meetings of Council,” said Mr. Streatch. “I plan to fulfill my duties to the residents of my district and to run in next October’s municipal election.”
The councillor has represented District 1 Eastern Shore-Musquodoboit Valley for 13 years, having been elected four times since 1999.
Mr. Streatch, a father of five and a grandfather, said his cancer treatments are expected to last about 8 weeks and that, if it became necessary at some point, he would likely seek medical leave from Council.
“I have been advised by my doctors to limit my other public engagements for the time being however my constituency office will remain open and I shall be in constant contact with staff there.”
Councillor Streatch has been receiving many messages of encouragement as news of his illness spreads. “I am truly blessed by the support of my wife Marilyn, my family, friends, colleagues and staff,” he said. “With their help, I shall come through this stronger than ever.”
