East Dartmouth Community Centre was officially opened on August 11, 2008.
After well over a decade of discussion and false starts, the East Dartmouth Community Centre is finally complete. The project has a total cost, including furnishing, of over $5.5 million.
Its a project that goes back to 1981 when former Aldermen Ralph Hawley and Jack Greenough secured portable classrooms for the Boys and Girls Club. There have been many attempts to get a permanent building constructed for the community since then, but since 2005 work has really moved quickly.
In January 2005, a group of residents formed the Dartmouth East Recreation Centre Society under the chairmanship of Mr. Simon Gillis. Regular meetings have been held to help HRM plan the facility. On September 21, 2005 a community meeting was held to ensure the project team was on the right track.
On June 14, 2006 proposed design drawings were presented to the public.
HRM's 2005/6 budget awarded $1 million towards the project in addition to $100,000 which had previously been allocated through the Indoor Recreation Needs Assessment Study. In September 2005 then provincial Minister of Health Promotion, Rodney MacDonald, awarded the project $1.1 million in provincial funding.
On January 10, 2006 Regional Council awarded an RFP for Architectural Services to Sperry and Partners and work is underway for final design. The building will be located at 38 Caledonia Road. The building will be the new home for the East Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club as well as a new HRM community police office.
In February 2006 Councillor Younger travelled to Ottawa where he met with staff of Minister Peter MacKay's office to discuss federal funding for the project. The provincial government and elected representatives of all parties and at all levels have also assisted in lobbying federal officials on funding. In October 2006, the federal government confirmed their $1.1 million contribution.
Subsequent to the Federal contribution, Regional Council agreed to provide an additional $1.15 million to the project bringing the municipal contribution to $2.25 million.
A tender was issued and was awarded in July 2007.
The facility opened on August 11, 2008.
