Natural Gas Pipeline Installation – Pleasant Street and Main Road
Beginning Thursday May 10, a natural gas main installation project will commence on Pleasant Street and Main Road from Hwy 111 (Circumferential Highway) to CFB Shearwater.
The work will take place Monday to Friday for approximately 12 weeks, starting at CFB Shearwater and progressing toward the Woodside area of Dartmouth. The traffic control setup for the first phase – CBF Shearwater to approximately Everette Street – will be as follows:
From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., two lanes northbound (Dartmouth-bound) will be maintained and one lane southbound (Eastern Passage-bound) will be maintained.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., one lane in each direction will be open at all times.
From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., one lane northbound (Dartmouth-bound) will be maintained and two lanes southbound (Eastern Passage-bound) will be maintained.
Three lanes are to remain open during the peak hours in order to minimize delays to motorists; however, some delays are still expected. All lanes will be open to traffic when the site is inactive.
Heritage Gas and HRM apologize in advance for any inconvenience these delays may cause.

A message from Councillor Jackie Barkhouse and Halifax Water
Due to the feedback and concerns expressed by a number of people, we are providing an official response from Halifax Water management.
With respect to the crane at the Eastern Passage Wastewater Treatment Facility site, it is an industry standard safety practice to disengage the main gear box on the crane when not in use to allow the boom to rotate away from the prevailing wind (like a weather vane). This ensures that the crane feels the least wind to prevent any chance of incident. Thus, if the wind is blowing in a certain direction the crane will extend over the road, which is the safest location during the wind.
Spring Clean Up
Staff resources will be assigned to regular spring activities such as pot hole repair and road shoulder maintenance. The bulk of resources will be assigned to clean up activities until the program is finished.
Crews are split equally between a night and day shift. This means that our profile will be reduced due to night activities. The results of our work however will be seen. Given the program is several weeks in duration there will be some areas of the city that appear un touched in the first phases of the operation.
Staff will be concentrating on the Capital Business districts, main arterials and boulevards in the first phase.
Sweeper trucks have been out on their schedules for a week now as have some crews. Operations placed front mounted sweepers on 5 ton trucks to improve services on streets with road shoulders and sweeping on 800 lane km of sand only streets. The bike lanes will be serviced with a combination of mechanical sweeping and hand work.
Some detailing activities such as street and sidewalk flushing are dependent on higher night time temperatures to avoid freezing creating dangerous situations. Night activities will also be focussed on boulevard clean up on areas such as Dunbrack, Bedford Highway, Forest Hills Parkway to name a few. Park areas within the Capital District will also receive attention at night where lighting facilitates the work activities.
Dartmouth/Bedford arenas to remain open for pre-season ice play
Three HRM ice surfaces that had been previously scheduled to close during the upcoming pre-season ice period will now be staying open. Bowles Arena (Dartmouth), Gray Arena (Dartmouth) and LeBrun Arena (Bedford) will be open to user groups in September for pre-season play.
After consultation with HRM Councillors and both user groups of the facilities, HRM Community and Recreation Services made the decision to leave all three arenas open this season and are investigating ways realize alternate cost efficiencies in other operational areas.
HRM staff are currently producing a Long Term Arena Strategy which will provide a framework for HRM’s ice surface availability in the coming years. The Long Term Arena Strategy is scheduled for completion and presentation to Regional Council in June 2012.
