Councillor Jackie Barkhouse was first elected to Halifax Regional Council in a December 2007 by-election. She was re-elected in October, 2008.
Jackie grew up in Halifax and on the Eastern Shore. She attended Dalhousie University. Jackie and her husband Steven have made Woodside/Eastern Passage their home for 30 years. They have a son and a daughter.
Throughout the years she has maintained a strong background in voluntarism, mainly through sports and recreation. As well, Councillor Barkhouse had been very dedicated to working with special needs students as an Educational Program Assistant with the Halifax Regional School Board for 15 years.
Prior to her election Councillor Barkhouse was a Labour Activist.
Jackie has a great love of the ocean, and has a particular interest in coastal protection and public access. Most recently, Jackie and a group of community members have worked hard to have Eastern Passage and Cow Bay recognized by HRM’s Sustainable Environment Management Office. This acknowledgement will now have these communities included in the implementation of the Climate SMART Community Action Guide to Climate Change and Emergency Preparedness. Through their persistence in keeping these communities in the forefront of HRM’s focus on the Climate SMART initiative, Eastern Passage and Cow Bay’s unique geographical needs and concerns will be addressed with this new strategy.
Jackie is passionate about social issues, and strives for balance when decisions are made at Council. While making decisions that will affect the whole of HRM, the best interests of her constituents are paramount.
Jackie is a firm believer in community involvement. Besides her role on Council, and the numerous committees of Council she serves on, she is still actively involved in many other community boards and committees in the communities of Woodside and Eastern Passage. She focuses on the positive in all things, and is persistent and committed to fighting for what she believes in.
