Jim Smith was elected to Halifax Regional Council in October 2000 representing the Albro Lake-Harbourview District of Dartmouth. Since being elected to Council he has held positions on a variety of committees dealing with issues including transportation, energy, harbour solutions, regional planning, natural gas distribution, and solid waste, public safety, among others. In November 2010 he was elected to a one year term as Deputy Mayor.
Committees he has served on include Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board; Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM) Board; Chair, Harbour East Community Council; Chair, Solid Waste Committee; Board of Police Commissioners and Dangerous and Unsightly Committee.
Councillor Smith received a Certificate in Local Government Administration from Dalhousie University Hensen College, a Certificate in Counselling Science from the Vancouver Counseling Institute and holds a 1st Class Power Engineers Certificate.
Prior to entering politics, Jim worked in management with National Sea Products and was involved with building management and operations of a number of Halifax Downtown Properties. He volunteered for many years in a variety of capacities with numerous community and professional organizations such as the Metro Food Bank Society, and was Chair of the Dartmouth North Community Centre Board and Chair of the District 9 Citizens Association.
Jim is a native Nova Scotian and has resided in North Dartmouth for 30 years. Jim and his wife Angela are actively involved in the community. During their free time, Jim and Angela enjoy dancing and the theatre.
