Presentation of a plaque from Captain Karlo Buer, Master of the
Seabourn Sojourn
which visited the Port of Halifax on its inaugural
voyage on September 25,
2011.

In 1967, British industrialist, Major General Kenelm Appleyard, presented to the City of Halifax five gas lamp standards and two stone water troughs, which had been the property of the City of Glasgow. After some discussion, the City offered them to Point Pleasant Park. The Commission declined the troughs, but accepted the lamp standards and installed them in the Tower Road parking lot in Point Pleasant Park. Each of the cast iron light standards weighs over 3,500lbs (almost as heavy as a small car). From a casting in the light bases it is assumed that MacFarlane (Saracen Foundry) was commissioned to produce the standards for the Glasgow Corporation Lighting Department. The lights have now been refurbished as part of the Federal Stimulus Project, refitted with replica LED luminaires, and relocated near the Lodge on Point Pleasant Drive at Young Avenue during the 2011 Tower Rd recapitalization project.

Two recent graduates of Halifax West High School, Peter Vaughan and Ali Cherom-Khierabaidi returned to Halifax West for Academic Recognition Evening March 24 for a special presentation. Along with their former teacher Barrett Khan (now Vice Principal of Cole Harbour High School) they received a plaque from the Naval Officers Association of Canada for their participation in a research project involving Canadian and UK high schools. Purpose of the project was to increase student understanding of the significance of the Battle of the Atlantic and the role of front line cities like Halifax during WW II. The two students under Mr Khan’s guidance produced a 9 minute video that was shown during the evening. Shown from left, Dr Guy Chauvin of NS Naval Officers Association, who made the presentation; Ali Chernom-Khierabaidi (now a student at Dalhousie University), Peter Vaughan ( a student at NS Community College) and Councillor Mary Wile (Clayton Park West).
