Understanding Your Tax Bill

To help residents better understand their tax bills, staff in Finance has developed a new service for the HRM website.

This new service enables residents to view a sample interactive tax bill. The sample tax bill allows residents to click on an area of the tax bill, get a description of the rate or charge, and view various related maps. The goal of this service is to enable residents to better understand their bills, while providing interactive tools for storefront and call centre staff to answer questions.

Transit Tax Structure

Regional Council approved a new transit tax structure as part of the 2009/10 budget. The ways in which taxes will be levied has changed, but the tax structure is revenue neutral on an HRM-wide basis. While it is not designed to take in additional taxes, the effects of the new structure will vary by district as well as from household to household dependent upon a home's proximity to a transit stop.  Visit the website to see the district-by-district breakdown for the approved transit tax structure changes and a map that shows areas that will, and will not, pay the regional portion of the tax. The chart only shows the impact for an average property in each district and residents would need to apply the rates provided to their own assessment to determine the effect on their taxes.
