Welcome

Welcome to District 14 … a district made up of wonderful neighbourhoods – each one with its own unique personality and history. Strong community connections help build safe, creative and vibrant communities so I encourage residents to meet one another by enjoying our neighbourhood parks, organizing neighbourhood street parties, or  by simply taking time to chat with neighbours on our beautiful tree-lined streets. The Good Neighbours/Great Neighbourhoods website (www.myhrm.ca) offers many great suggestions of how to connect with one another.

In order to keep residents up to date on upcoming events, I maintain a ‘district’ email list. If you would like to be added to this list, please email me (addresses will not be shared).

I greatly appreciate being District 14’s representative on Regional Council.  Please be in touch with your ideas, comments and suggestions on district and regional issues.

Important Notice for Residents in the Quinpool Rd

and the Young/Robie/North/Windsor Sts Areas

HRM is currently undertaking public consultations with residents about zoning and plan amendment changes for the Quinpool Rd. and the Young/Robie/North/Windsor Sts. areas.  These changes are part of the Regional Plan review that is now taking place.  I would strongly encourage residents living in close proximity to these streets to read information about the proposed changes and to attend meetings so that you are aware of the potential changes and can offer feedback to HRM staff and councillors.

For specific information on the proposals for each area and dates of upcoming meetings please click on:

Going Car Free

As part of a fundraiser for the Stephen Lewis Foundation and their work on HIV/AIDs in Africa I gave up driving my car for the month of December in 2010.  It was a great way to learn the joys and challenges of sustainably moving around this municipality. If you are interested in hearing more about my experience please go to:  http://spacingatlantic.ca/2010/12/21/councillor-jennifer-watts-on-why-she-decided-to-go-car-free-this-december/

As a result of this experience I have decided that I will commit to not driving a car for one week out of every month. I need to make this commitment otherwise I think I will slip back into the convenience of driving my car. Hopefully, this will help me chose alternatives to the car for the rest of the month.  For the record (and to keep me accountable to my pledge) here are the dates:

January 17- 23, 2011

Feb 26 - March 4, 2011

March 22 - 28, 2011

April 26 - May 2, 2011
