This fall I will be working with HRM Cultural Affairs staff and local artists to develop a project in District 14 that will involve using social media and technology tools to help residents tell the story of our district – the history, culture, and current affairs. This technique of capturing stories and having them shared through new technology is called Locative Media.
Ultimately the goal is to produce a medium that will allow individuals (or groups) to walk around the district visiting various locations and experiencing the history, stories, and cultural significance of these areas from the perspective of residents via a mobile technology: cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, etc. It has the potential to be a history and current affairs storytelling project with an active living component all rolled up into one. The project will involve research of stories, developing maps of the district that reflect points of interest, collection of stories and some involvement in the technical aspects of developing the social media tools. Local schools will be contacted to see if there is interest for classes to be involved in the project. Residents interested in being part of this project (either with ideas of stories or actual involvement in the development of the project) can contact me for further information.
