Community Gardens

At Regional Council on April 27 the staff report from the fall was presented to council and discussed.  There was lots of support for community gardens and there is now an application process for starting community gardens on HRM owned property.  Information on this process and an application form are available at http://www.halifax.ca/CRCA/CommunityEngagement/CommunityGardens.html.

The report is available at http://www.halifax.ca/council/agendasc/documents/100427ca8.1.pdf

Community gardening is a great way to learn and share skills on how to grow food, to produce food for local consumption and to build community.  Oxford School is the site of a new garden project in our district. HRM is currently developing a policy about developing community gardens on HRM owned property.  If you are interested in being involved in community gardens in the district please contact me.

Local sources of information on community gardens include:

Nova Scotia Environmental Network

Ecology Action Centre

Urban Farm Museum of Spryfield

North End Community Garden

There are also community garden projects at Bloomfield School.

Urban Chickens

On December 14, 2009, Peninsula Community Council passed a motion that "staff open a planning application to consult with the public, address any potential issues (e.g. separation distances, number of hens, prohibition of roosters) and, if appropriate, draft amendments to the Halifax Peninsula Land Use By-law to permit backyard laying hens." At this time, only amendments to the Peninsula LUB are being considered; existing regulations will continue to apply in other communities (e.g. Halifax Mainland, Dartmouth).

A public information meeting was held on
Wednesday, February 10, 2010.  The proposal is undergoing a detailed review by staff. Staff will prepare a report to be tabled at Peninsula Community Council. If Council decides to consider the Land Use By-law amendments, they will schedule a public hearing. Notice of a public hearing will be published in the newspaper and on the HRM website.

Further details on this case will be posted here:
