Student Voters:
The Municipal Elections Act was revised in
2011 to clarify eligibility for student voters commencing in the 2012 Municipal
and School Board Elections. Student voters must meet the basic eligiblity
criteria of being 18 years of age by October 20, 2012, Canadian Citizen, and
ordinarily resident in HRM for at least three months prior to the
election and if temporarily absent (such as during the summer) have
returned and are residing in HRM. Students who are ordinarily resident in HRM
(their personal or family home is in HRM) but are absent elsewhere may choose to
cast their vote in HRM.
It is a violation of the Municipal Elections Act
for anyone to cast a ballot if not qualified to vote or for an office which they
are not qualified to vote for.
