Corporate Energy Benchmarks

HRM spends approximately $25 million in total energy consumption each year, and building energy use accounts for more than $10 million of that total. It is important to understand how much energy is consumed and how much it costs before making investments. HRM is a strong believer in annual benchmarking of its corporate buildings.  This is a fundamental energy best practice that has been undertaken in HRM since 2004.

By sharing energy benchmarks for individual sites in an accessible Excel format online, HRM hopes to encourage other municipalities to follow suit. HRM seeks to lead by example sharing its approach and findings to serve as a municipal benchmarking resource.

Benchmarking data is often difficult for municipalities to calculate because of their complex organizational structure and variety of unique facilities, which typically include buildings such as rinks, community centers, fire stations and libraries. By sharing energy benchmarks for individual sites in an accessible Excel format online, HRM hopes to encourage other municipalities to follow suit. HRM seeks to lead by example sharing its approach and findings to serve as a municipal benchmarking resource.

A master benchmarking spreadsheet compiles information from 2008 to 2011 and incorporates information such as square footage, costs (as of 2011), water consumption (as of 2011) and more.  This database is regularly updated and is used to identify opportunities for energy efficiency projects and upgrades to reduce overall energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and costs.
