Sustainability Funding

  • HRM has established a Sustainable Community Reserve Fund through an FCM loan for the Harbour Solutions Project. The Fund will provide HRM with new capacity to help finance environmental projects throughout the municipality.

Preference will be given to applications that undertake initiatives based on the following order of importance:

      • Waste reduction (minimizing the creation of waste)
      • Reuse
      • Recycling & composting
      • Preference will be given to initiatives that provide ongoing waste reduction, reuse and recycling opportunities such as the purchase of permanent source separation containers or implementation of a program that encourages behavioural change.
      • Funding will not be provided to cover the cost of garbage collection.
      • A one time only approval will be given to cover the cost of collection of recyclables and organics at special events.
      • A one time only approval will be given to cover the rental cost of recycling and organics collection containers.
      • Sponsorship funding is limited so resources will be allocated to those events/initiatives with the greatest financial need and highest diversion potential.
