This rural site known as the Jefferson Property, located at 1359 Fall River Road in Fall River, encompasses approximately 9 acres. The lakeshore site, rich in cultural and historical significance located in the heart of community offers many opportunities for passive outdoor recreational pursuits, as well as boating, swimming, skating on Lake Thomas in the historic Shubenacadie Canal system watershed.

  • A portion of the land features an old growth forest of Eastern Hemlocks, 200 year old farming area with orchard and original stone wall and gently slopes down to Lake Thomas.
  • According to an Archaeological Resource Impact Assessment (Davis Archaeological Consultants Limited, January 2005) the site has cultural and historical significance to the Black Community of (former) Halifax County and to Nova Scotia.
  • The Williams family (occupants) led the establishment of the Baptist Church in Fall River (1869) - establishment of Black education and community institution.
  • Artifacts, items and information of this cultural and historical significance will be displayed / interpreted within the facility as well as outside on site.
