
Construction on the North Preston Community Centre was completed in 2004. It was originally designed to host various community events such as public meetings, concerts, guest speakers, wedding and funerals, however, it did not include dedicated youth space. The proposed expansion is in response to the increase in demand for youth specific programming space. The current expansion plans include:
Due to the popularity of the existing centre the North Preston Advisory Committee and representatives from HRM seek to expand the facility to better serve the North Preston community. For months, the North Preston Community Centre Expansion Committee (including HRM staff, Councillor David Hendsbee, the North Preston Advisory Committee) have been working to create an expansion design that will create an area in the centre for youth to enjoy.

The proposed expansion would also provide the RCMP with space to establish a permanent office. The RCMP's goal for this office would be to provide enhanced services to the community and increase public safety. The proposed new office would be open Monday to Friday, during normal business hours
The RCMP would have permanent staff and would be able to offer the services now available only from the Cole Harbour Office (e.g. Criminal Records Checks, accident reporting etc.). The RCMP Office would be home base for the Preston Patrol members
