Wildfires of 2008

On June 13th HRM experienced 2 large wildland fires in Tantallon and Porters Lake/Lake Echo.


We would like to acknowledge the enormous contribution by the dedicated volunteers, agencies, businesses, and community groups who gave their time and efforts that significantly contributed to the outcome of the fire and displaced residents.

2008 Wildfire Video

 

Porters Lake/Lake Echo Wildland Fire

  • approximately 5000 people, 800 homes evacuated
  • approximately 6000 acres burned
  • 2 homes were lost, several damaged
  • all evacuees returned home by Monday
  • during peak of fire there were 47 units on scene

 

Tantallon Wildland Fire

  • approximately 130 acres burned
  • 1/4 km wide X 1.5 km long
  • originated behind homes on Fir Lane
  • behind Glen Haven Estates subdivision
  • 32 homes evacuated
  • all evacuees returned home by noon on Sunday
  • minor damage to 2 homes
  • 10-12 pieces of apparatus responded
  • 12 career firefighters, 25+ volunteers, 20+ DNR firefighters
