Do's:

Comply with all manufacturers recommendations for installation and safe operation.

Have your chimney inspected if you have had or suspect you have had a chimney fire.

Clean the appliance at least once a year. (Depending on the type of wood burned, this may require more frequent cleaning.)

Use dry, seasoned wood which will reduce the risk of creosote.

Look for ULC/CSA/WARNOCK HERSEY certification on the appliance. In most cases this certification will also show the required clearances to combustible materials.

Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the home.
Don'ts:

Never let the fire smolder, make sure it is completely out.

Don't leave clothing or other combustibles near the appliance to dry.

Never use flammable liquids like gasoline, kerosene and lighter fluids to start a fire.

Never move the appliance closer to combustible materials. Always follow manufacturer's specifications.
Preventative Maintenance:

Always remove ashes to a covered metal container.

Have your chimney cleaned and inspected regularly.

In the event of a fire GET OUT and STAY OUT.
