The GISS or Geographic Information Systems and Services Group are a section of the
Data/Business Information Management Division of the Halifax Regional
Municipality's municipal government.
We provide GIS services to internal business units, consultants working for
the Municipality, special interest groups and the general public. We
regularly provide tactical maps, administrative boundary and service
area maps, custom map and data layer development. We provide proximity and drive distance analysis to assist in defining optimal service areas, service routes, placement of new municipal locations (i.e. Fire stations), and for tax purposes
Our mandate is to support daily operations of the Municipality and to
promote the advanced use of GIS in provision of a quality and cost
effective service to the public.
Our staff compliment includes 3 GIS Technicians, 1 GIS Analyst, 1 GIS Programmer/Analyst, 1 Senior Advisor - EMO & Police GIS Services, 1 GISS Manager.
Some interesting things we've done:
Created an Interactive Public Mapping site
Worked with Civic Event Planning staff to develop site plans for:
Created a number of internally used interactive mapping applications
Partcipated in a number of projects including:
- Fire Station Re-location
- Urban Density Study
- Electronic Waste Recycling Site Selection
Things we will be completing in 2009:
- Complete architecture upgrade in partnership with Halifax Water
- Roll-out of a GPS enabled vehicle mapping system for the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)
- Upgrade of all ESRI technology to release 9.3
New things in 2009:
- Roll - out of HRM Atlas
- Development of a long-term organizational strategy for GIS, including aerial photography
